Reading the Qur'an as a Non-Muslim
Reading the Qur'an as a Non-Muslim
Reading the Qur’an as a Non-Muslim was written with two purposes in mind. Firstly, I wanted to sit with an unfamiliar text in a devotional way and allow it to speak into my life - seeking to encounter the loving presence of God/the Holy within it, and to deepen my understanding of this reality.
Secondly, I wanted to understand how the Qur’an shapes a Muslim’s consciousness of God, as a way of building greater understanding between traditions. Islam is often misunderstood in Western contexts, and I wanted to foster a deeper sense of awareness and compassion for the role this faith plays in the lives of Muslims. In particular, I hoped to invite those who might otherwise dismiss Islam to encounter a greater sense of Love and Peace within its message.
As I began this work, I did not realise how profoundly it would shape my own life. Over a period of thirty days, across the seasons of Ramadan and Lent, the Qur'an led me into a deeper awareness of myself and brought new friendships with Muslims. One person shared that, through our meeting, they have renewed hope that things can be different for them in the world. I hope that it will be not just for them, but for all.
As I was brought into a deeper awareness of myself before God/the Holy, I wrote this account of healing from the abuse I had experienced in personal relationships.
